Maker Culture in Consumer Society

The Tyee and Rabble.ca have an interesting take on a movement which would have made Karl Marx proud; Maker Culture, an answer to contemporary consumer culture. Maker Culture is characterized as a return to our roots, revisiting a time when people had to make their own products and be self relient. This movement is rooted in the Do-It-Yourself subculture, allowing "makers [to] challenge the mainstream and make instead of buy".
Making is an alternative to buying similar products in stores, and can be utilized for personal, monetary and community driven needs. There are several interviews throughout the article with successful 'Makers', such as Noreen Awan of Buttercream Cupcakes who takes pride in her involvement in every step of her foods production process.
